Jones Vargas is the result of the merger of two of Nevada's oldest and most respected law firms, Jones, Jones, Close & Brown and Vargas & Bartlett.
The origin of the Jones firm can be traced back to 1938 when Cliff Jones, one of the five 1938 Nevada bar admittees, established his office in Las Vegas. He was joined by his brother Herb shortly after World War II. Over the past 60 years, the Jones brothers' law offices have been the starting point for many of the finest attorneys in Nevada. Mel Close and his partners merged with the Jones firm in the early 1970's which in turn merged with Bell & LeBaron in 1973.
The origin of the Vargas firm can be traced back to the early 1920s when Morley Griswold founded the firm in Elko, Nevada. In 1928, Morley Griswold established an office in Reno. In 1934, then Governor Griswold was joined by George Vargas. In 1962, Mead Dixon, a highly regarded business and gaming attorney, and his firm of Springmeyer, Thompson & Dixon merged with the Vargas firm. With the addition of Mead Dixon, the Vargas firm expanded to Las Vegas in the early 1970s. In 1991, State Senator Bill Raggio and his firm of Raggio, Wooster and Lindell, merged with the Vargas firm.
By the 1990s the Jones firm and the Vargas firm had each developed reputations as the leading law firms in Nevada. With the Jones firm located primarily in Las Vegas and the Vargas firm primarily in Reno, these two outstanding firms merged in 1997 under the name of Jones Vargas. Since the merger, the Jones Vargas firm has continued to progress and is now considered to be unique among the most prominent and influential law firms in Nevada.
The Jones Vargas firm roster has included governors, state senators, state assembly representatives, state bar governors and presidents, governors of the American Bar Association, community leaders and casino executives. The excellence of the Jones Vargas firm enabled it to grow and develop along with Nevada in its transition to the resort and entertainment capital of the world, a progressive state with a business friendly outlook.
