"In law school I was taught that a corporation is like a living person, except that a corporation has no soul. But after practicing with Nevada's finest lawyers for over 50 years, I can tell you that Jones Vargas has a heart and a soul."
Herbert M. Jones L.L.B., University of Arizona, 1947 Jones Vargas
At Jones Vargas, we understand that our success depends upon our ability to attract and retain outstanding lawyers. We recruit and hire associates who have participated in our summer program; we hire 3rd year law students; we welcome interest from associates who have completed judicial clerkships, and we are always interested in high caliber lateral candidates.
Summer Program Jones Vargas is noted for the breadth of its hiring. Among the 70 lawyers in the firm, 30 different law schools are represented, including: Arizona, Boyd (UNLV), Brigham Young, Harvard, Northwestern, Oregon, Pepperdine, San Diego, Santa Clara, Tulane, Texas, UCLA, USC, Utah, and 15 others. We welcome interest from exceptional law students at any law school. Jones Vargas looks for candidates who show academic achievement, good interpersonal skills, great leadership, and excellent writing ability.
In recent years we have hired three to five summer clerks for our Las Vegas office, and two to three for our Reno office. Candidates selected to participate in the summer program are typically 2Ls. Summer clerks are asked to work full-time for the entire summer. Summer clerks are given client-billable, clerk level projects on which to work. They receive regular feedback on their work product.
Jones Vargas understands that relationships are important, and the firm holds a number of social events throughout the summer to help our summer clerks get to know us, and for us to get to know them. To help our summer clerks gain a complete understanding of the firm, we arrange for the summer clerks in each office to travel to the other office. Each summer clerk is paired with an associate "buddy" to help him or her become oriented to the firm and "learn the ropes." The firm also has an Associate Orientation Manual covering everything from the firm's expectations of clerks and associates to how to work effectively with a secretary.
In addition to being a top quality law firm, Jones Vargas has a well-deserved reputation as a great place to work. Jones Vargas lawyers work hard, but they also know how to have fun. The workweek is punctuated by welcome breakfasts for new hires, impromptu birthday parties for lawyers and staff members, regular lunch meetings and periodic social occasions in the firm's boardrooms. Jones Vargas is a place where life-long friendships grow and prosper.
At the end of the summer, hiring decisions are promptly made. Our summer clerk classes are small so historically we have been able to make job offers to each summer clerk who qualifies.
In 2007, our summer clerks will earn $1,650 per week.
Entry Level Associate Hiring Entry-level associates at Jones Vargas are hired through our summer program, from judicial clerkships, and from offers made to third year law students.
Associates at Jones Vargas receive competitive salaries in the Las Vegas and Reno markets, plus a cash holiday gift, the opportunity to earn an annual merit bonus, and an excellent benefits package, which currently includes health and dental insurance with a prescription plan, long term disability insurance, life insurance, a 401(K) and profit sharing plan, paid family & medical leave (which may also be used for maternity and child care following a birth or adoption), paid bar and professional association dues, reimbursement for CLE expenses and free parking.
Candidates who receive an offer to join the firm while in law school commence employment as law clerks after they take the bar exam (either in August or March). In the period between graduation and the bar exam new hires do not work but Jones Vargas provides a $10,000 (gross) stipend upon the candidate's graduation. This stipend is provided to pay the candidate's bar review and exam fees as well as transition expenses.
New associates who join the firm after judicial clerkships are typically given credit for their year of service on the firm's "shareholder track," and are paid the same as other Jones Vargas associates who graduated in the same law school class.
Lateral Associate Hiring The growth of our practice frequently results in the need for lawyers with specific experience. We welcome interest from candidates who have practice experience which is consistent with the firm's practice. Depending upon the length and quality of their experience, lateral hires are given credit for their prior experience in consideration for admission as a stockholder, and they receive salaries that recognize their prior experience.
